World AIDS Day: PEPFAR’s 2024 Accomplishments

This year, on the 37th World AIDS Day, the U.S. Department of State published a statement from Ambassador John Nkengasong, the U.S. Global AIDS coordinator and senior bureau official for Global Health Security and Diplomacy. The statement highlighted the accomplishments of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and emphasized the importance of sustaining the gains that have been made in the HIV response.

In his statement, Ambassador Nkengasong said, “Preventing new HIV infections requires a combination prevention strategy that harnesses the power of community engagement and maximizes the impact of innovations. New data released today shows PEPFAR has increased new enrollments on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by more than 500% since 2020 — providing more than 2.5 million people at high-risk with protection from HIV infection in fiscal year (FY) 2024 alone.”

PEPFAR also shared its Latest Global Results & Projections Factsheet (December 2024). Results in FY 2024 include:

• 20.6 million people on life-saving antiretroviral treatment
• 2.3 million adolescent girls and young women reached with comprehensive HIV prevention services
• 6.6 million orphans, vulnerable children, and their caregivers received critical care and support
• 2.5 million people newly enrolled on PrEP to prevent HIV infection
• 83.8 million people provided with HIV testing services
• 342,000 health workers directly supported by PEPFAR
