Summary:

Watch our conversation about the impact of social determinants of health on HIV care, the latest data from HAB EHE recipients, and more.

At the 2024 National Ryan White Conference on HIV Care and Treatment, Yemisi Odusanya, MPH, EHE Senior Advisor at HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB), spoke with HIV.gov about the social determinants of health and HAB’s latest results from the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative. She spoke with Arielle Desir, MPH, Fellow, Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy. View their conversation below.

Social Determinants of Health

Yemisi shared an overview of the social determinants of health — the conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect their health—and how they impact people with HIV. She highlighted that the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program supports clients in addressing social determinants of health such as housing, transportation, education, and access to nutritious food so that they can get the quality HIV care they need.

Latest EHE Results from HAB Recipients: Doubling the Number of New and Re-engaged Clients Served Compared to 2020

Yemisi also discussed the latest EHE data from HAB which she had presented during a plenary session earlier in the conference.

Among other findings, HRSA’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program 2022 EHE Initiative Data Report showed:

  • In 2022, HAB EHE-funded providers served more than 22,000 clients who were new to care.
  • EHE-funded providers also served 19,204 clients estimated to be re-engaged in care.
  • Together, this nearly doubled the number of new and re-engaged clients served by HAB EHE-funded providers in 2022 compared to 2020
  • From July 2021 through June 2022, RWHAP Part F AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) Program recipients also conducted 483 EHE-funded trainings, a seven-fold increase from July 2019 through June 2020.

“What’s even better,” Yemisi said, “is that our recipients received a limited amount of funding and have done such great work!”
